Preventing AI Bias

We are entering a new era with the advent of artificial intelligence - but its success will largely depend on how we implement it. Therefore, it is extremely important that businesses identify harmful artificial intelligence biases (AI bias) as soon as possible, and then align around principles that mitigate them as quickly as possible.

AI bias happens when a software does something unintended or something with malintent because of poor or incomplete data. When there is poorly trained software, critical decisions could be made with unintended bias, leading to poor outcomes such as biased hiring practices. To combat this, we must proactively address bias and develop and deploy AI in a socially responsible way, using a governed approach to protect both individuals and our society.

To prevent AI bias, we must use bias-mitigated AI in order for it to make decisions in socially responsible ways, especially in important areas such as health care, public or financial services, and justice.

Firstly, AI must be fair and make decisions that the best employee would make, based on work-relevant factors, rather than biased factors such as race, gender, or socio-economic status.

Secondly, AI must analyse quality data - with accurate inputs and outputs, with minimal false positives or negatives - in order to deliver top performance.

Lastly, AI must be able to adapt to behave accordingly to environmental changes. In the case of the pandemic, AI has been used to respond to real-time issues without the need for external manpower.

As A.I was built as a tool for improving human lives - simplifying our workload and delivering accurate results in real-time - we need to ensure that AI is well-managed in our own businesses, and hold each accountable for the practices they follow. Only then will we be able to use artificial intelligence to their full potential, in terms of productivity, personalization, and even equality.

Here at Pensees, we believe that A.I was built as a tool for improving human lives - simplifying our workload and delivering accurate results in real-time - and have adopted "A.I as a service" as our mission. We are committed in our mission to ensure that AI is well-managed in our own operations, and hold each employee accountable for the practices they follow. Only then will we be able to use A.I for good - pushing artificial intelligence to its full potential, in terms of productivity, personalisation, and even equality.
